Everyone around me brought microcontrollers, 3D printing filaments, and whole startup decks.
I brought a notebook and confusion.

PREMISE A — THE HUMAN CONDITION:

We all have dreams.

Goals.

Feelings.

Love.

Passports.

← Humans get legal identities, visas, emotional breakdown privileges.

PREMISE B — THE UNASKED QUESTION:

BUT WHAT ABOUT OBJECTS?

ഒരു കട്ടൻ ചായ കുടിച്ച് ആലോചിച്ചപ്പോൾ തോന്നിയതാ...

"A thought that struck while sipping black tea at an SCMS lab bench."

Do they dream?
Of retiring to a quiet drawer?

Do they feel?
When dropped on cold tile?

Do they want to travel?
Anywhere outside India?

Do they want to speak?
Or just scream at us?

4:00 PM — THE EPIPHANY

"WAIT. WHAT IF I GAVE THE OBJECT A LIFE?"

Not just a passport. A whole backstory. Traumas. Desires. Regrets. An immigration interview where it pleads for its existence.

"ഒരു പാവം ടൂത്ത്‌പേസ്റ്റിന് പാസ്‌പോർട്ട് കൊടുത്ത് വിടാമെന്നാ ആദ്യം വിചാരിച്ചത്... പിന്നീടാണ് തോന്നിയത്, ആ ടൂത്ത്‌പേസ്റ്റായിട്ട് അങ്ങ് ജീവിച്ചാൽ എന്താ?!" 🪥✨

(Just wanted to stamp a visa for a humble toothpaste... then thought: why not let the user actually LIVE the existential crisis of that toothpaste?!)

OH NO.

NOT A CORPORATE "CHALLENGES" SECTION. REAL BUGS THAT ALMOST KILLED THE MAKE.

BUG #01 // HALLUCINATION FATALITY

The Sentient Cherthala Warhead

Held a plastic Bisleri water bottle in front of the camera during early vision tests. The AI returned: "Object: Soviet Nuclear Intercontinental Warhead manufactured in Cherthala, 1984. Threat Level: Catastrophic."

Verdict: Water bottle denied entry under anti-terrorism regulations.
BUG #02 // THE NEGATIVE BRIBE

The Officer Paid Me ₹50

In an early build of the immigration interrogation, typing -50 in the bribe input resulted in the officer saying: "Aha! You have taxed me! Take this ₹50 and please cross the border immediately!"

Fix: Added Math.max(0, bribe) so the government doesn't go bankrupt.
BUG #03 // PREMATURE MORTALITY

Dead Before Born

A race condition between eval-action.js and the UI renderer caused objects to trigger their death sequence while the passport animation was still sliding onto the screen.

Tragic Result: Instant obituary for a pen that never had a chance to live.
BUG #04 // SVG TEXT OVERFLOW

The 800-Word Name Disaster

Gemini decided to output a 4-paragraph psychological treatise inside the single-line Object Name field, completely obliterating the passport layout and pushing the footer into outer space.

Fix: Brutal 32-character string truncation with ellipses.

DEEP DIVE // SYSTEM TELEMETRY

UNDER THE HOOD: THE DUAL-AI VISION ARCHITECTURE

HOW A SILLY PREMISE WAS BUILT ON SERIOUS ENGINEERING: DUAL-MODEL RACING, MULTI-FRAME CONSENSUS, AND ZERO-WIFI RESILIENCE.

PILLAR 01 // REDUNDANCY & LATENCY

Dual-AI Async Race Engine

With 100+ makers straining SCMS college WiFi, external API calls frequently spiked to 8+ seconds or threw 429 rate limits. We built an asynchronous race architecture firing Google Gemini 2.0 Flash (strong visual object detection) and NVIDIA Nemotron simultaneously. Whichever provider responds first with valid JSON wins the passport grant. Roundtrip latency plummeted to <1.2 seconds.

const winner = await Promise.race([
  callGeminiVision(frames),
  callNemotronVision(frames)
]);
PILLAR 02 // COMPUTER VISION

Multi-Frame Canvas Consensus

Holding a physical object in front of a laptop camera in dim midnight lighting produces severe motion blur. Single-shot image detection frequently hallucinated bananas as lightbulbs. Our client pipeline streams from navigator.mediaDevices into an offscreen HTML5 <canvas>, captures 3 staggered frames across 600ms, standardizes aspect ratios, and dispatches multi-frame consensus to filter jitter.

// 3-frame buffer consensus
ctx.drawImage(video, 0, 0, 320, 240);
const frames = await captureBuffer(3, 200);
PILLAR 03 // PROMPT ENGINEERING

Satirical Manglish Persona & Bribe State Machine

Generic LLM system prompts produce sterile, polite corporate assistants. We engineered strict negative constraints and few-shot Manglish examples to enforce a cynical Kerala border official persona ("mwone", "scene mone", "adichu shape maattum"). It features an interactive bribe state machine: typing a ₹50 tea charge triggers facial state transitions (stare → doubt → pass) and unlocks passage!

if (bribeAmount >= 50) {
  officer.mood = 'pass';
  return "₹50 tea charge accepted! APPROVED!";
}
PILLAR 04 // FAULT TOLERANCE

Zero-WiFi Deterministic Heuristic Fallback

At 03:30 AM, campus connectivity abruptly died. If the app crashed during judge testing, game over. We implemented generateSmartPassport(): a zero-dependency deterministic heuristic generator that hashes the object's string name into mathematical seeds to calculate unique passport IDs, existential missions, and death clocks entirely in <10ms offline.

catch (networkError) {
  // Instant 10ms offline generation
  return generateSmartPassport(objectName);
}
COMMUNITY & SQUAD DYNAMICS

THE SQUAD THAT WASN'T A TEAM

ON PAPER, I WAS REGISTERED AS "01 MAKER // 1 TIRED STUDENT". IN REALITY, THIS PROJECT WAS POWERED BY THE TINKERHUB SCMS COMMUNITY.

Hackathons often look like isolated teams huddled over keyboards with headphones on. But Useless Projects 3.0 at SCMS School of Engineering was completely different. Even though many of us came in solo or in small squads, the late-night pressure erased all classroom divisions. We weren't competing against each other — we were all fighting the same 03:00 AM sleep monster.

"Nikhil was hacking on a truly legendary useless idea: a device designed to trap mosquitoes and psychologically irritate them. Before this night, I had zero embedded hardware experience. Collaborating with Nikhil at 03:00 AM became an incredible hands-on crash course: I learned how Arduino microcontrollers read analog inputs, how ultrasonic & motion sensors trigger detection gates, and how buzzer actuators pulse frequencies to harass insects."

✦ Hardware-Software Symbiosis: While I learned sensor wiring and Arduino logic from his mosquito rig, Nikhil helped calibrate my webcam angles and stress-test computer vision with items from his pockets!

Murshu, Fifaa & Niranjana

THE MIDNIGHT TEST SQUAD & DEBATE CLUB

"They were sitting right nearby throughout the night. Whenever my computer vision pipeline needed testing, they didn't just give feedback — they emptied their backpacks. Water bottles, biscuit wrappers, broken pens, ID cards. They helped debate whether a crushed tube of Colgate had constitutional rights under object law, and kept spirits high through every API crash."

Alok, Albin & Ajay

CROSS-BATCH COMRADES

"Different branches, different classes. In normal college life, you walk past each other in the corridors without a word. But at 02:00 AM on the lab floor, they were sharing phone hotspots when the college network choked, debugging build errors together, exchanging charging cables, and cheering on every absurd stage demo."

Murshuu's Chaos Engine

CHIEF MORALE OFFICER

"When the room went silent at 02:30 AM and everyone was staring blankly at syntax errors, Murshu walked across the lab tables doing unscripted comedy and motivation. That laughter was more effective than three cans of Red Bull. It transformed exhaustion into pure creative momentum."

"If Useless Projects 3.0 hadn't happened, I probably would never have met or connected with Alok, Albin, Ajay, Nikhil, Murshu, Fifaa, and Niranjana. Even though we weren't registered as a single team, we worked as one big team — helping everyone, laughing together, and surviving 18 hours of ridiculous making."
